What Is DHT and How Does Propecia Help?
DHT is a male hormone in the body that causes hair loss, and it is usually hereditary, and what it does is to shrink the hair follicles until visible hair cannot be produced by the hair follicles. The cause for this in men with male pattern baldness is an over production of DHT and as men grow older the over production of the hormone increases. This causes increases in hair loss, since more hair follicles are affected and can not replace the hair that is falling out.
The normal process of hair growth is a loss of dead hair that is replaced by new hair, when there is an over production of DHT this is no longer possible, the hair that is dead falls out and is not replaced, causing bald spots.
Propecia is able to change this by changing the level of DHT, the drug stops the over production of the hormone and that enables the follicles that shrunk to enlarge. This means the enlarged hair follicles are then able to produce hair again, where the bald spots have occurred. Over time the bald spots will fill in again with hair the same texture as what was lost, without surgery or other treatments
