Propecia and Rogaine are the two medications for hair loss that have been approved by the FDA for treatment in male pattern hair loss. The difference in the medications is Propecia is a pill form that is taken daily and can only be obtained by prescription. Rogaine, on the other hand, is a topical medication and can be purchased over the counter.
They both work to re-grow hair, however one of the largest differences between them is not only that one works from inside the body, while the other works from outside to be absorbed through the scalp. This difference is the ingredients; Propecia was made to be used for male pattern baldness, stopping the loss of hair and the growth of new hair. Rogaine was not manufactured in the beginning for male pattern baldness; it was manufactured as a blood pressure medication. This is the difference for many men, because as a man ages, the chance for hair loss and high blood pressure both increase. Rogaine can cause problems for the male that has high blood pressure; since it was manufactured with ingredients to treat blood pressure it does not mix well with other blood pressure medications.
