What If Propecia Is Stopped?
When Propecia is being taken for male pattern hair loss and the patient decides they no longer want to take the pill any longer it can have an impact. The hair that has re-grown will most likely be lost.
This is because for men that has male pattern baldness they have an excess amount of hormones known as androgens. The FDA approved drug to treat hereditary male pattern baldness decreases the production of the hormones.
When Propecia is stopped this also stops the decrease of androgens, which is what caused the hair loss in the first place. For this reason, it is recommended men who begin taking the drug continue it, even if they do not notice re-growth of hair for an extended amount of time. This is because for some men it can take between three and twelve months before seeing hair growth. If taking it for longer than twelve months and there is no sign of re-growth Propecia may not work for this person.
There are a large percentage of men with male pattern baldness this drug works for, in studies it has been proven to work for as many as 86 percent of the volunteer subjects.
